That's a Badge My Son Would Get Hands Down

Boy Scouts Offer New Merit Pin -- for Video Gaming

It's a shame he's never shown the slightest interest in joining the Boy Scouts. I always wanted to do it as a kid, but my parents didn't have the time. I've offered several times to take him, but he's never wanted to go.

Go figure.

Go read through this and your enthusiasm for scouting will be dampened. It's the "Guide to Safe Scouting"
(http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/toc.aspx) or as I came to call it "the big book of boy scouts don't". BSA is so full of bubble wrap these days, it's really sad. They'd forbid the boys from having pocket knives and using axes if those weren't so tightly interwoven with the image of what scouts do.

Wow, that's some eye opener.
I was mostly OK with their standard liability stuff until I got down to "Unauthorized and Restricted Activities".

I think I'll just take him hunting myself later. We were going fishing this weekend anyway.

Thanks for the heads-up!

No problem. When I was a scout back in the late 80s it didn't seem too bad, but after I helped start up a troop 7 years ago, I've lost my enthusiasm for it. They've gone so far afield from B-P's vision of scouting, it's not even the same thing anymore.

I would recommend reading the original "Scouting for Boys" though. It's worthwhile. (He expected troops to form volunteer fire brigades!)
